INERCO, AN EXPERT INVITED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF COLOMBIA TO ANALYSE THE IMPACT OF MINING ON THE COUNTRY’S ECOSYSTEM
The Government of Colombia called upon on Yaniro Gabriel Medina, Technical Manager of INERCO Colombia, to participate in the inter-institutional discussion table of environmental experts that carries out scientific and social research to define the impact of mining activities on the ecosystems of Colombia.
Medina was invited as an environmental expert to this debate forum in which public and private entities analysed the consequences on the environment and communities that the important mining activity in the country has involved. All taking place over a maximum period of two years, within which the final conclusions will be known.
This initiative, a result of the judgement T-445, 2016 of the Constitutional Court, has brought together a team of 80 people, with representatives from the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Mining and Energy, the National Natural Parks, the ‘Alexander von Humboldt’ Institute of Biological Resources Research and proven experts for the formation of a working group that is carrying out research through which the Colombian Administration can take the relevant measures regarding this issue.
For Yaniro Gabriel Medina, this initiative will distinguish the mid and long-term future of extractive activity in Colombia, “with a rigorous and independent study in which we lay the foundations for the sustainable development of an activity that is essential for our country’s economy.”
